LAS VEGAS, NEVADA — The Vegas Sizzling Seniors is a track and field team open to women and men age 50 or better and of all fitness and ability levels. While the goal is to improve athleticism and performance, the group fosters friendship, fellowship, support, and overall health and fitness.
The team is lead by Martha Watson, four-time Olympian and Nevada Senior Games track and field coordinator, and Carla Carpenter, a runner, race walker, and USA Track & Field official. They formed the team in July 2015 to provide mature athletes a place for camaraderie, support, and friendly competition. At the practices, Julie Baker, a certified personal trainer, often leads attendees in a series of warm ups designed for running, walking, and throwing activities.
Members of the Vegas Sizzling Seniors train for and compete in masters track and field competitions in Las Vegas and throughout the region. Many also participate in Olympic-style local and state senior games including the Henderson Senior Games, Mesquite Senior Games and Nevada Senior Games. Members often travel to out-of-state senior games as well, often in an effort to qualify for the biennial National Senior Games.
The team has weekly practices at Myron Partridge Track on the campus of University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) located at the corner of Harmon Avenue and Swenson Street.
Visitors and “snowbirds” are welcome to join in practices as well.
Membership is free and open to anyone age 50 or better.
