GLOSSARY

PRIMARY TERMS ACCORDING TO SLOWPOKE DIVAS

Below you'll find how I define the primary terms and sports I focus on here at  SlowpokeDivas.com. This is for consistency and clarity because they will vary from other places you'll find on the Internet!

ACTIVE TRAVEL

1) Tourism: To explore a place or locale on foot or by bike or to participate in an athletic event (i.e. 5K or marathon) in a specific locale (see below, "destination race"); or

2) Commute: To use walking or cycling as a means of transportation within one's community and beyond

FITNESS WALKING

A form of aerobic exercise to improve cardiovascular health and overall fitness with less stress and impact on the body.

The primary goal of fitness walking is to improve endurance, stamina, strength, and more. Goals may also include participating in a local 5K for fun or enjoying a getaway with walking tours.

POWER WALK

A competitive sport that requires participants to maintain foot contact with the ground at all times.

An official sport of National Senior Games Association (must be at least 50 years of age to participate).

RACE WALK

A competitive sport that requires participants to maintain a straight forward leg (no bent knee)  from the time the front foot touches the pavement until the leg passes under the body, and maintain contact with the ground at all times (no running).

An official sport of USA Track and Field and the Summer Olympics.

SENIOR GAMES

Olympic-style multi-sport athletic competitions for active adults ages 50 and better. Many organizers offer adaptive options so that all abilities may participate.

The National Senior Games Association is the nonprofit umbrella organization for senior games across the U.S. and hosts biennial competitions in the odd year in a different host city. Most states have a NSGA-member organization to hold qualifying events for the NSGA and annually.

MORE HELPFUL DEFINITIONS

A type of workout that includes segments of alternating high-intensity effort and periods of lower-intensity exercise. Example: five minutes easy effort followed by one minute of hard effort.

Segments will vary in number, effort, and time of each effort based on the person's current physical conditioning and overall health, and training goals. This is a common training strategy in  cycling and walking for overall fitness, event, touring, and race preparation.

The most beginner-friendly type of competitive cycling because it's basically you against the clock!

TRIATHLON

Distances, locations, surfaces, and other conditions will vary. Examples: gym "triathlons" with indoor pools, stationary bikes, and treadmills; lake swims, mountain biking, and trail running, and; a run, bike and swim reverse sequence.
