Welcome to wet and rainy Henderson, Nevada for the 2013 Ironman 70.3 World Championships! No blazing sun today, only blazing fast pros and the top “age group” triathletes from around the world vying for honors.

While you can watch top pro athletes and live coverage on Ironman.com, I’ll be focusing on the ladies over 40 years of age. They are the ones who inspire us “slowpoke divas” to get moving, stay moving, and dream big!

How many women over the age of 40 are racing today? Here is the breakdown* by age group:

  • 40 – 44 = 106
  • 45 – 49 = 94
  • 50 – 54 = 69
  • 55 – 59 = 40
  • 60 – 64 = 24
  • 65 – 69 = 10
  • 70 – 74 = 1

Melodie Cronenberg, competing to become 65-69 women's age group champion in Ironman 70.3 World Championship, Sept. 8, 2013I have keen interest in the 65-69 group because my tri gal pal Melodie “Mel” Cronenberg is competing. She’s been a triathlete now for about 10 years and has raced in Ironman 703. World Championships and numerous Ironman World Championships held in Hawaii. She qualified for a return to Kona last month when she won her age group in Ironman Louisville (KY). Today, Mel is racing to become champion in her age group as well as preparing for next month’s race.

GO MEL and safe racing to *all* the athletes today. Stay tuned!
